EALS is pleased to welcome you to its 2008 Annual Conference and General Meeting, which will take place in Zanzibar between Thursday 27th and Sunday 30th November 2008 (travel dates inclusive). The conference will be held at the Bwawani Hotel in Zanzibar

Early Bird Registration (Up till Thursday, November 20, 2008) for the conference is USD 150 per person. From Friday, November 21, 2008, late registration fee of USD 200 shall apply.

Registration is payable to EALS either directly, or through the national Law Societies (clearly marked EALS AGM 2008 ). Participants will make their own transport and accommodation arrangements in line with international best practices (e.g. by the International Bar Association, Commonwealth Lawyers’ Association, Southern African Development Community (SADC) Lawyers’ Association and others).

Payment should be in cash or cheques in favour of the East Africa Law Society. This should be accompanied by a dully filled registration form(s).

Transport PDF Print E-mail
Participants will make their own transport and accommodation arrangements, either directly or through travel agents. We shall however endeavour to provide information to assist participants to make ideal choices. A number of airline companies – operate daily flights in and out of Zanzibar. There are also options for those who wish to arrive in Zanzibar using the Road and Sea.

We have developed a database showing the travel itineraries and costs as at September 30, 2008. The travel costs are subject to change as at time of booking. We encourage you to book TODAY to secure a good rate.

The Conference Programme shall include presentations on various relevant topics of interest.  Among the areas that the AC/AGM shall discuss include:

1. Recent developments at the EAC

2. Dispute resolution mechanisms

3. Gaps and challenges on laws on HIV and AIDS in East Africa

4. Institutional deficiencies in the rule of law in East Africa

5. Challenges of litigating at the Regional Economic Courts (RECs)

6. Recent jurisprudence at the East African Court of Justice (EACJ)

There shall be break-away sessions as well.

4. Prof Fredrick Ssepembwa, Advocate, Kampala, Uganda. TOPIC: Prospects in International Courts and Tribunals in Africa: EACJ 

5. Ms. Grace Nekoye Katasi, Senior Analyst, Kenya Anti Corruption Commission, Nairobi, Kenya. TOPIC: The Anti-Dumping Legal regime in the East African Region: Is it necessary?

6. Ms. Monica Mbaru, ICj-Kenya, Nairobi, Kenya. TOPIC: Prospects in International Courts and Tribunals in Africa with a focus on the African Court of Justice

7. Ms. Nankunda Katangaza, International Policy Manager, Law Society of England and Wales, London. TOPIC: The EU Experience and the Clash of the Civil and Common Law Traditions with regards to In-house Counsel

8. Ms. Roseline Odede, Advocate, Eldoret, Kenya. TOPIC: Stress Management for the Busy Lawyer

9. Ms. Shabana Osman, Advocate, Behan and Okero Advocates, Kisumu, Kenya. TOPIC: The Essence of tax harmonization within the East African Community

10. Mr Turyahebwa Robert, Dean, University of Rwanda. TOPIC: Prospects in International Courts and Tribunals in Africa with a focus on the United Nations ICTR Archive Committee
