The main areas of Access to Justice are:

    * Provision of legal aid
    * Provision of pro bono legal services
    * Public interest litigation

In May 2006, there was a comprehensive Eastern African Access to Justice Workshop, held in Zanzibar, co-hosted by the Zanzibar Law Society and the East Africa Law Society, and facilitated by the Canadian Bar Association, under its Eastern Africa Program. The workshop brought together the main legal aid providers in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda. This workshop identified the various needs and challenges to Access to Justice in the region. At the end of the Workshop, the participants resolved to become more active, innovative and also collaborate more in access to justice issues in their respective countries. They recommended a regional mechanism or platform which would enable them to communicate throughout the year, learn more from and offer each other solidarity, and, from time to time, engage in joint initiatives. In view of the unique niche, mandate and capacity of EALS, they requested it to catalyze and facilitate this regional mechanism, hence the birth of the Eastern African Access to Justice Network.
